These are the foundation of notary public training in Washington. You must read/review before we meet up. Write down your specific notary public questions so we can address them. (Bring your Notary Public Oath of Office and valid ID if you need it notarized for your state notary application.)
1. WA notary fees have changed since it published this notary manual. Fees for notarial acts are currently $15, not $10. See WAC308-30-220
2. My training covers WET signings only. That means pen & paper, face to face signings with documents and your signer physically in front of you. My training does not cover eNotary or RON. New notaries should learn how to properly identify signers in person and how to perform notarizations on paper first.
NEXT SESSION:
Must be 18+, able to read and write English. We'll recap materials, Q&A, hands-on practice identifying signers & performing notarizations, a final Q&A, then session ends.
WHAT TO BRING:
If you need it, I am happy to notarize your Notary Public Oath of Office form for you after our hands-on practice session ends. No charge. Remember to print and bring with you. And of course, bring valid photo ID.
This 2-hour hands-on practice session will be held at Cutters Point Coffee 1340 Marvin Rd, Olympia, WA 98516.
Or contact me to arrange a private 1-on-1 practice session with me at your chosen date/time/location (travel fee TBD).
A training certificate will be emailed upon completion of our follow-up Zoom Q&A. This call is an opportunity to gauge your Washington notary public knowledge and understanding, your level of comfort, and you can ask me any final training questions.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the free notary training materials that you have read. We will briefly recap and answer any preliminary questions before we jump in.
You will practice identifying a signer, swearing/affirming a signer, and completing any or all of these 7 basic notarizations:
1. Individual Acknowledgement
2. Representative Acknowledgement
3. Verification on Oath or Affirmation (jurat)
4. Witnessing or Attesting to Signature
5. True and Correct Copy
6. Witnessing or Attesting to an Act or Event
7. Administering an Oath or Affirmation
Bring it and your government-issued photo ID. I can notarize it for you at no charge when our session is over. Or you can call later to schedule a time to come to my location to have it notarized.
NO QUIZZES, NO TESTS, NO FINALS. Instead, we'll have an informal group discussion via Zoom. View this as an opportunity to gauge in real time your personal comfort level and confidence, your understanding of your role as a notary public, and our Washington notary rules. And you can ask any notary training questions that may have come up.
EXAMPLE QUESTIONS I WILL POSE THE GROUP VIA ZOOM:
Based on responses, I may offer feedback and suggestions. I will also seek your feedback and suggestions. When we finish, I will email your Olympia Notary Training certificate.
We'll use this during our hands-on notary practice session.
(Click "Download PDF" to activate links; they do not work in viewing mode.)
Blank notarial certificates you are welcome to print and practice on your own.
This 2-hour hands-on practice session will be held at Cutters Point Coffee 1340 Marvin Rd, Olympia, WA 98516, unless you have arranged for private 1-on-1 practice session with me at your chosen location and have also paid a travel fee. Travel fee depends on travel distance.

Notary public training is recommended but not required or mandated by the State of Washington. So if you completed online notary public training from the NNA or elsewhere (or maybe you have gone the self-study route) and YOU FEEL UNSURE HOW TO PERFORM BASIC NOTARIZATIONS, my Olympia Notary Training™ can help.
Olympia Notary Training™ offers PRACTICAL HANDS-ON TRAINING SESSIONS for brand new notaries to help you understand your vital role and responsibility as a notary public using the Washington State Notary Public Guide and established industry best practices. Washington notary materials are free. All you must do is take the time to study it before we meet. (Please print the Washington notary guide and NNA's notary code of professional responsibility and remember to bring with you.)
When we meet, ask your notary questions, and we can practice identifying a signer, practice swearing/affirming a signer, and practice performing any or all of these 7 basic notarizations:
1. Individual Acknowledgement
2. Representative Acknowledgement
3. Verification on Oath or Affirmation (jurat)
4. Witnessing or Attesting to Signature
5. True and Correct Copy
6. Witnessing or Attesting to an Act or Event
7. Administering an Oath or Affirmation
[We do not cover how to Make or Note a Protest of a Negotiable Instrument in any of my training. Per Washington State Law: "A notarial officer may make or note a protest of a negotiable instrument only if the notarial officer is licensed to practice law in this state, acting under the authority of an attorney who is licensed to practice law in this or another state, or acting under the authority of a financial institution regulated by this state, another state, or the federal government. In making or noting a protest of a negotiable instrument the notarial officer or licensed attorney shall determine the matters set forth in RCW 62A.3-505(b)." So if this type of notarization is something you will do in your job, you must seek/obtain direct instruction from the attorney or financial institution you work for.]
A hands-on notary practice session may be just what you need to help prepare you, so that you can finally feel confident enough to launch your independent notary public career in Washington. The goal is to help bridge the gap between any online training (or rigorous self-study) you may have had and your first notarization assignment with real people, real documents. Carmen Lane is the Olympia Notary Training workshop leader. Purchases are non-refundable. I am not a licensed attorney and cannot and do not provide legal, financial, or immigration advice. Any opinions expressed are my own. You are in charge of your own notary business and for knowing/understanding/following the rules and best practices of your chosen profession. Always, always, always follow the law.
